Rarely does one have the luxury of being paid to have “creative freedom.” In my job, we’re used to going out onto the track to take photos or videos of athletes, camera in hand, with no time to spare so as not to miss the chance to capture the perfect pose.

This time, however, I allowed myself the luxury of bringing a tripod, a monitor, and carefully thinking through each shot.

Sometimes, the magic of a competition isn’t just in what happens on the track, but in everything that makes it possible. I shifted the camera from the athlete to the organizer, to the moments that happen before and after the action, to the small details that allow an athlete to compete. To how past generations teach the new ones.
